Hello, I’m Michelle from Opting Out, based in Brighton (and sometimes London), UK. Subscribers can enjoy monthly posts around slow living, rest, and opting out of burnout culture, plus my weekly Weekend Mood Board of what’s currently inspiring me. Paid subscribers get access to ALL my work, including the Slow Reading Group, live Co-Resting sessions, yoga nidra audios and pre-recorded full-length restorative and yin yoga classes.

It’s my intention to create a community of resters, questioners and misfits. Are you in? ✨

Today I step into the last year of my forties, and instead of making a list of things I want to achieve before I turn fifty, I’m making a list of what I’m leaving behind. A conscious shedding, an opting out.

Here’s what no longer has a place in my life:

  1. Feeling rushed

  2. The cult of “productivity”

  3. Anti-ageing rhetoric

  4. Hair dye

  5. Endless self-improvement

  6. FOMO

  7. Turning away from difficult emotions

  8. Traditional gender norms

  9. Alcohol (I stopped drinking socially over 8 years ago)

  10. Immediate replies to emails

  11. Cosmetic foundation

  12. Avoiding conflict

  13. Superficial conversation

  14. Energy vampires

  15. The attention economy of the Algorithm

  16. Coffee

  17. People-pleasing

  18. Saying “yes” too quickly

  19. Burnout

  20. Background TV

  21. Worrying about what other people think

  22. Doubt

  23. Self-pity

  24. Fast fashion

  25. Over-scheduling

  26. The 9-5 grind

  27. Black Friday

  28. The hard sell

  29. Unethical marketing

  30. The “wellness industry” (*vomit emoji)

  31. Influencer culture

  32. Instagram Yoga

  33. Toxic hyper-individualism

  34. Anything that aggravates my nervous system

  35. “Dressing for your age”

  36. Dancing to the beat of someone else’s drum

  37. Blame

  38. Keeping the capitalist machine turning

  39. Culture wars

  40. Othering

  41. “You” statements

  42. Harsh movement practices that don’t honour my almost-50-year-old body

  43. Negative body image

  44. Guilt

  45. Fitting into a neat little box

  46. Urgency culture

  47. Performative positivity

  48. Measuring worth by output

This feels less like a rejection and more like a clearing. A way of creating space for what truly matters.

Opting out is, for me, an act of love, of resistance, of returning to myself.

Questions for Reflection and Discussion

  • If you were to make your own “opting out” list, what would be on it?

  • What are you ready to leave behind as you move into your next season?

  • How might clearing away what no longer serves you create more space for what truly does?
