We live in a culture that glorifies exhaustion, where burnout is a badge of honour, and rest must be earned. We are told that our worth is tied to how we sell our time and energy. We are hooked on the dopamine-dispensers in our pockets.
I started Opting Out as a gentle rebellion.A place to explore what it means to stop striving, slow down, and reclaim rest — not as a reward, but as a right.
When we opt out, we are in command of our attention, rather than being a slave to the algorithm. We can discern the injustices that need to be addressed, and act from a resourced place, rather than a depleted one.
What you’ll find here:

intersectionality and collective liberation
Notes on rest as an act of resistance
Reflections on stillness, slowness, and self-worth
Musings on social media, the attention economy and quiet rebellion
Restful practices: yoga nidra and restorative yoga
A Slow Reading Group, where we can share thoughts on texts of rest, liberation and opting out, chapter by chapter
live fortnightly Co-Resting sessions (starting July 2025)
Quiet reminders that you are already enough
This is not a productivity newsletter in disguise.
This is for the misfits and the questioners, the ones who are ready to step off the treadmill with grace, and maybe a blanket and a bolster.
It is my intention that this is a safer space for queers, people of colour, all genders (including transgender and gender non-conforming), neurodivergent folks.
Why “Opting Out”?
Because saying no is powerful.Because doing less isn’t lazy — it’s liberating.Because the world doesn’t need more burned-out people trying to prove they matter.
Here, we rest.We resist. We opt out.
You’ve already done enough. You can rest now.
Opt into Opting Out!
