In Japanese, there’s a word: Yutori (ゆとり). The online dictionary jisho.org translates yutori as ‘space; elbowroom; leeway; room; reserve; margin; allowance; latitude; time (to spare)’. So it roughly translates to room to breathe, a margin of time or space, mental ease.
More than just free time, yutori is the feeling of standing at the train platform a few minutes early, instead of rushing to get there. It’s walking through your day with a little buffer, a little grace. It’s cultivating spaciousness. It’s telling yourself “I have time”, and meaning it.
It’s the opposite of how most of us live.
The culture of no margin
We’ve normalized living at capacity: our days are scheduled to the minute. Our minds race, our bodies contract. We don’t just fill our calendars — we overfill them, because full feels productive. And productive still feels like proof that we matter, that we are important, somehow.
But without margin, there’s no ease. And without ease, we confuse effort with meaning.
Practicing Yutori
I’ve been asking myself lately:
What would this look like with more Yutori?
This morning.
This task.
This conversation.
This body.
This moment…
What if I planned to do less, and left space in between? What if I lay down without guilt, moved more slowly on purpose, or chose to pause before reacting? What if I chose to stop rushing, forever?
What if my life had a little more room to exhale?
Rest is Yutori
When we rest, not so that we can be more productive, but to simply be, we’re making space where there was none. We’re choosing to live with a margin. We’re choosing not to fill every moment, not to say yes to every demand, not to be available 24/7, not to live at the edge of collapse.
Opting Out is Yutori. It’s not a refusal to care, it’s a refusal to be consumed. We don’t have to earn this space. We just have to allow it. It’s already there, we just have to tune into it.
Today’s invitation:What would it feel like to do the next thing, anything, with just a little more Yutori?
No rush. You have time.
🖋️ Journaling Prompt:
Where in my life do I feel most rushed, tight, or overfilled? And what would it look like to add just a little more space there - a few extra minutes, one breath, one boundary, one pause?
You might write about your mornings, your calendar, your conversations, your thoughts. Don’t try to fix it all, just name the places that feel cramped. Then imagine what Yutori might feel like there.
Take your time. Write slowly.
